A Beginner’s Guide to Sports Nutrition for Indian Athletes

Sports nutrition is an essential step in the life of an athlete. An athlete’s diet directly influences his on-field performance. Muscle recovery and overall health also depend on the nutrition an athlete receives from food. Let’s be honest: at the international stage, even a talented athlete can’t survive for long if they don’t show discipline in their food habits. Reaching the pinnacle of physical fitness requires careful attention to dietary habits. Here’s a comprehensive guide to navigating the basics of sports nutrition.

What Is Sports Nutrition?

In 2010, Novak Djokovic was diagnosed with gluten sensitivity and he did what was necessary to become the best – he removed gluten from his diet. Similarly, former Manchester United player Ji Sung Park used to drink a special drink made from frogs. There are many stories where athletes changed their food habits to get the most out of their bodies. This is what sports nutrition is all about – to eat food that enhance strength and help consume macronutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, including micronutrients vitamins and minerals. Adequate hydration is also one of the main components that supports an athlete’s performance in sporting activities.

How revenue model works in Indian Sports Leagues?

What Macronutrients should be part of an Indian Athletes’ Sports Nutrition?

Macronutrients

1. Carbohydrates: These are energy-giving nutrients for sport persons. They are the body’s main fuel source. Right carbs can help athletes during extended practice sessions. Common sources of carbohydrates are rice, chapati, oats, sweet potatoes, and fruits.
2. Proteins: These are needed for repairing and constructing muscles. Protein are also important for growth and development. Main source of protein are: dals, paneer, eggs, chicken, fish, and tofu.
3. Fats: Human body need a certain amount of fat to stay healthy. They can be considered as source of secondary energy which helps in sustaining the body generally. Fats provide energy in the form of calories and play a crucial role in absorbing important vitamins – called fat-soluble vitamins – including vitamins A, D and E. Important source of fat include Nuts, seeds, avocado, and Indian ghee.

What Micronutrients should be part of an Indian Athletes’ Sports Nutrition?

Micronutrients

1. Iron: They are essential for oxygen to be carried around your body. Iron is also crucial in making hemoglobin. Sources of Iron include spinach, beetroot, lentils, and jaggery.
2. Calcium and Vitamin D: An athlete need to sustain healthy bones and good muscle movement. Calcium and Vitamin D help in that regard. Source are Milk, orange juice, infant formula, yogurt, margarine, butter, cheese and breakfast cereals. Natural source: sunlight.
2. Electrolytes: This micronutrient play a huge role in a life of an athlete. They help retain fluids and prevent cramping. Electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, phosphate, and bicarbonates. Recommended foods are Bananas, Avocados, Sweet Potatoes, Spinach, Beans, Lentils, Pistachios, Orange and Yogurt.

Hydration

Dehydration has a huge impact on athletic performance. An athlete should drink water regularly and rehydrate before and after the exercise. In hotter environments, electrolyte drinks or home made drinks such as salted lassi or lemon water should serve as a good alternative.

How an athlete should prepare a balanced diet?

Preparation of Balanced Diet Plan: The diet of an athlete should be sport-specific and dependent on the intensity of training and curative goals. Also, an athlete should know which nutrient is harming his body and should exclude those foods from his diet chart completely. Regardless, here’s an example plan below for an Indian athlete:

Pre-Exercise Nutrition
A meal or snack, eaten 1-2 hours before physical activity must have considerable amounts of easily digestible carbohydrates that will provide a boost of quick energy to their muscles, besides adequate amounts of protein.

Examples:

  • A banana with a spoonful of peanut butter.
  • Poha with vegetables.
  • Small bowl of oats with fruits.

Nutrition During Exercise
Athletes sweat a lot during exercise or training drills and consume a significant amount of energy. Muscles also experience considerable stress during intense workouts and matches. Nutrition during exercise helps athletes sustain energy levels, preserve muscles, and stay hydrated, leading to improved performance in matches.

  • Coconut water
  • Energy bars
  • Homemade lemon water with salt and sugar

Post Training Nutrition
Recovery nutrition is essential. After an intense workout or the match, an athlete should follow a nutrition that helps in restoring glycogen stores, repair the muscles, and keep the body fully hydrate. Examples include:

  • Protein shake with banana
  • Rice
  • Grilled chicken
  • Vegetables
  • Dal, roti, curd bowl

About Indian Food
Please keep in mind that the Indian food can be a lot different. Most of the time, it is flavorful and nutritionally rich. Indians can easily include some famous dishes that can help meet their training requirements:

  • South Indian Diet: Idli, dosa, and sambar are very rich in carbohydrates and proteins. Put a boiled egg or paneer into the diet for extra protein.
  • North Indian Diet: Dal, roti, and sabzi is the most common thing. Add curd or lassi for probiotics and one glass of milk at night.
  • Snacks: Fried snacks are substituted by roasted chana, makhana, or dry fruits.

Supplements: Do You Need Them?

A well planned diet meets almost all the nutritional needs of an athlete. Still, sometime, due to the quality of the food, an athlete may need supplements such as:

  • Whey Protein: On-the-go intake after workout
  • Creatine: Strength and power sports
  • Multivitamins: Supplement wherever there is a gap in the diet
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Anti-inflammatory properties. Take all supplements only with the advice of a sports nutritionist or a physician. Vegetarian diets for Indian athletes.

Most Indian athletes are vegetarians, which poses the difficulty of sufficient protein in the diet. In that case, an athlete should pair protein sources like dal with rice or chapati, to ensure that there is a complete amino acid intake. Add plant-based options like tofu, tempeh, and quinoa.

Useful Tips for Indian Athletes

Learn From the Best: One of the simplest ways to inculcate good food habits is to follow global sports icons such as LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Virat Kohli, to name a few. All these players are close to 40, yet they continue to perform at a remarkably high level. LeBron, in particular, is still the best player for the Los Angeles Lakers in most games, which is unimaginable considering he is almost 40.

Indian athletes should learn from their habits, diet plans, and everything athletes like LeBron, Cristiano, and Virat do on a daily basis.

Conclusion

Nutrition is as important as training for an athlete’s success. Talent alone won’t take an athlete far without the discipline. Consistency is key, as nutrition isn’t a one-day fix. For long-term success, an athlete should be disciplined with their food habits and follow a rigid diet plan. Additionally, an athlete should listen to their body, as each individual is unique. Monitoring how the body reacts to different foods and adjusting accordingly is essential.

Pro Kabaddi Players who have defied age and continue to rule PKL

Kabaddi is a demanding sport. Apart from mental toughness, you need to be robust and flexible with your body to avoid injuries on the Kabaddi mat. Over the years, we have seen many players suffer injuries while playing in the Pro Kabaddi League, with muscle tears and hamstring injuries being the most common.

That being said, there are a handful of players who have featured in the league almost since the debut season and are still ruling the mat. The longevity of these players is something to be proud of, and maintaining their fitness for a long time in a physically demanding game like Kabaddi is nothing short of extraordinary.

In this post, we have compiled a list of three Pro Kabaddi players who have defied age and continue to rule PKL. So, without wasting any further time, let’s go deep down into this list.

1. PO Surjeet Singh (Defender)

The first name on this list is Right Cover Defender, PO Surjeet Singh. Surjeet is a veteran of Indian Kabaddi and has been a part of Pro Kabaddi League since 2016. Surjeet was born on 10th August 1990 and has been a part of several teams in PKL history. Surjeet’s first franchise was Puneri Paltan, and then he went on to represent teams like U Mumba, Bengal Warriorz, Tamil Thalaivas, Telegu Titans, and Bengaluru Bulls. He is currently representing Jaipur Pink Panthers in the ongoing PKL season. Surjeet has been a lynchpin of the league and holds the record for the most High 5s in PKL history. He is 34 now, and it would be interesting to see how many more seasons are left in him for Pro Kabaddi League.

2. Maninder Singh (Raider)

Former Bengal Warriorz skipper Maninder Singh is the second name on the list of Pro Kabaddi players who have defied age and continue to rule PKL. Widely recognized as ‘Mighty’ Maninder Singh, the might of this phenomenal raider’s dominance is evident by the fact that he stands second on the list of most raiding points in PKL history, closing in on 1,500 raid points. Maninder made his PKL debut in the inaugural season, i.e., in 2014, but missed the next two due to injury. Despite not featuring in two seasons on the trot, Maninder is still the second most successful raider. Maninder is 34 right now and has been doing more than decent this season; it would be interesting to see how much ‘Might’ Maninder would be left in him for the upcoming PKL seasons.

3. Fazel Atrachali (Defender)

The third name on this list of Pro Kabaddi players who have defied age and continue to rule PKL is Iran and Bengal Warriorz’s current skipper, Fazel Atrachali. ‘Sultan’ Fazel Atrachali is one of the most decorated defenders in the league’s history. Fazel stands atop the ladder with the most tackle points in PKL history. Fazel is 32 right now and still remains one of the most lethal left-corner defenders in the league. With fitness by his side, we wish to see him doing his bit in the upcoming PKL seasons as well.

Revenue Models in Professional Sports Leagues

Professional Indian sports leagues have indeed experienced marvelous growth over the last decade or two with leagues such as IPL, ISL, and PKL reaching significant commercial heights. The strategies these leagues have implemented are a key aspect of their continued survival and success. These leagues depend on multiple sources of revenue to finance their operations, pay the teams participating in the leagues, and also improving the match experience for the fans watching the games in the stadiums or at home.

So in this article, we look at the different revenue sources for professional leagues in India. This comprise sponsorship, merchandising, broadcasting rights, and much more.

Sponsorships: The bedrock of Revenue Models

Title Sponsors | Associate Sponsors | Team Sponsors

The main source of revenues for Indian sports leagues is the sponsorships. Companies always want to associate with leagues with wider reach and influence to enhance their own brand image and increase revenue. Sponsorship deals mainly relate to title sponsorships wherein the name of the brand is directly attached to the league – for example, Tata IPL, and Hero ISL. Title sponsors are also termed as the official sponsors of the league.

After title sponsors, come the associate sponsors. These sponsors get the less brand presentation than the main title sponsors of the league. For example, My11Circle, Angel One, RuPay & CEAT are one of the many associate sponsors of the IPL.

For instance, in the IPL, title sponsorships attract high figures—Tata’s two-year deal is priced at ₹670 crores.

Team sponsorships, on the other hand, are associated with teams that are sponsored by brands. By partnering with successful teams or teams featuring marketable athletes, such as Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore, brands gain enhanced exposure and a strong entry into the market.

Broadcasting Rights: Most Significant Source of Revenue

Broadcasting rights is one of the most money-spinning revenue streams for sports leagues. Cricket is the sport in India, and the broadcasters are willing to pay a huge amount of money for exclusive rights to broadcast the matches. For example, media rights for the IPL for the period 2023-2027 were sold for a whopping ₹48,390 crores.

While the broadcasting rights for the NFL and Premier League are in billions. India’s Premier Kabaddi League (PKL) is also on the rise in terms of getting traction and viewership, and so the broadcasting rights for the league are likely to go up in the near future. The same can be said about other leagues such as the Indian Super League (ISL).

The broadcasting agreements show the value of the league and the massive traction it generates across all platforms.

Streaming Services: The Digital Revolution

With the rise of the internet and the ever-increasing number of mobile users in India, the number of people using streaming services to watch their favorite shows and live matches on their mobile screens is growing day by day. Streaming services have revolutionized sports broadcasting in India.

Streaming services have opened new revenue streams for leagues like the IPL. Now, leagues can sell digital rights separately from broadcasting rights. For instance, Viacom18 paid a staggering ₹23,758 crores for the IPL’s digital rights.

Ticket Sales: Matchday Revenue

On matchday, it’s the fans who are the most important factor for the broadcasters and also for the teams. Not only are they the largest single source of matchday revenues through ticket sales, but they also create the atmosphere inside the stadium, which in turn affects the overall ratings of the matches across other platforms. Ticket sales remain an extremely important source of direct revenue for leagues and franchise owners. Also, ticket sales are directly related to a team’s fan following.

Leagues also devise different ticketing innovations, such as family packs and early-bird promotions, to ensure sold-out matches and maximize revenue through ticket sales.

Merchandise: A way to connect with fans

Merchandising in Indian sport is not at the same level as it is in Europe and the USA, but it’s catching up slowly. Remember the ICC 2023 ODI World Cup final match when almost all the fans wore the Indian shirt, making Narendra Modi Stadium a sea of blue. In football, merchandising is one of the biggest revenue sources for the clubs. From jerseys to caps and mugs with official logos and whatnot, every asset a league or team has can be used for merchandising. Merchandise sales bring in direct revenue and also work as a marketing tool that can enhance the visibility of a brand.

Other than Team India, IPL teams also see tremendous national-level selling of jerseys and other merchandise, especially among teams like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

Licensing Agreements: Beyond the Field

Leagues and teams also offer licensing agreements to interested stakeholders. This includes allowing the stakeholders to use logos, team names, and other branding elements. Some examples of licensing agreements include the creation of branded products — a mobile game, a collectible, or even a fantasy league tie-up. In other cases, media houses are allowed to use team photos in articles.

Consider Dream11’s association with the IPL as a fantasy league partner, which, apart from increasing fan engagement, also brings steady revenue through licensing fees to the league. These associations demonstrate how leagues are monetizing their assets.

Conclusion: India Needs to Catch Up

Though leagues and teams in India have more revenue sources than they did a decade ago, they still lag behind Europe and the USA. Watching matches on streaming devices or TV is one thing, but engaging fans and giving them reasons to connect with the teams or the league is a completely different challenge.

The IPL is over a decade old, yet it’s still viewed as a league with a strong entertainment factor. In Europe and the USA, fans are more immersed in the matches, with a deeper emotional attachment, and almost everyone in the stadium wears the team jersey. While teams in the IPL, ISL, and PKL are making good money, buying official merchandise is still a tough ask. First, it’s expensive, and second, there are only a handful of official team stores selling authentic merchandise.

Leagues and teams in India must evolve better systems to engage with fans and enhance their matchday experience.

IPL Auction 2025: 3 Teams that will go hard to acquire Rishabh Pant

Arguably the biggest name in the auction pool, Rishabh Pant will certainly attract interest from all 10 franchises during the IPL Auction 2025. It was a real shock when Delhi Capitals (DC) and Pant decided to part ways, with the player deciding to go to the auction. A player of his stature, considering the relatively young age, is like a gold dust. No matter how heavily a team is stocked with talent, there’s always a spot for a player like Pant in any playing 11.

IPL Auction 2025: 3 Likely destinations for Rishabh Pant

Signing Pant could be a game changer for any team. He is the sort of player and is at an age where franchises can build teams around him. Here’s a list of 3 teams we think will go with all their power to sign him during the IPL Auction 2025.

1. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Chennai Super Kings have all the reasons in the world to go all in for Rishabh Pant. MS Dhoni is almost the end of his IPL career, and Rishabh Pant is perhaps the most ideal candidate to take over the wicket-keeping duties from the legendary former Indian captain. Pant could also be a future captain of this franchise if the management look for another option. Pant fits all the bill at Chennai Super Kings – an Indian player, with a big profile who is a proven talent at the world stage.

Probability of CSK signing Rishabh Pant – 80-90%.

Chennai Super Kings’ Reasons to sign Rishabh Pant:

  • Long-term replacement for MS Dhoni
  • Indian Nationality

2. Delhi Capitals

For reasons unknown, DC failed to retain Rishabh Pant. But despite the player going to the auction, DC will still have upper hand. For the Delhi outfit have two Right To Match (RTM) cards, which they can exercise if the right opportunity arises.

But the biggest reason for Delhi Capitals to sign Rishabh Pant is that he is their former player and captain. At 27, he is still a young player and will reach his peak in the coming years. When the franchises are shelling out big amount on players such as Pat Cummins or Heinrich Klaasen, who SRH retained for INR 23 crores, Pant demands big amount and DC will be carrying a good purse into the auction.

Delhi Capitals’ reasons to sign Rishabh Pant:

  • Former Player
  • Big Name
  • Fan-Favorite

3. Mumbai Indians

It’s still a shock that Ishan Kishan’s name is missing from the list of Mumbai Indians’ retained players, which includes Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma. The fact that MI decided not to retain Ishan but opted for Tilak suggests that the five-time IPL champions may have another option for the wicket-keeping position. With no disrespect to Ishan Kishan, Pant is a player in a completely different league. His signing could instantly make the Mumbai Indians favorites for the IPL 2025 title.

Mumbai Indians’ reasons to sign Rishabh Pant:

  • Franchise might look for Ishan Kishan replacement
  • Big-name player

Let’s take a look at Rishabh Pant’s IPL Stats

Mega 2025 IPL Auction: Teams that can buy Shreyas Iyer

As the date for the Mega IPL 2025 Auction draws closer, anticipation is soaring high. Big names players and an improved budget for franchises, this upcoming auction has all the ingredients to surprise one and all. There will definitely be players who are likely to go unsold, while some players are expected to start a bidding war. One such player who is expected to garner significant interest when his name pops out of the auction hat is Shreyas Iyer. Being an experienced player with an Indian nationality is a sought-after combination. Iyer showed last season that he is a captaincy material after guiding the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a title in IPL 2024.

Mega 2025 IPL Auction

With so much caliber as a player and as captain, teams will leave no stone unturned in signing him. Here are three teams who could shell out big money for his services.

1. Kolkata Knight Riders

Let’s be honest, Kolkata Knight Riders may have made a mistake in allowing Shreyas Iyer to go to the auction. His calm and composed nature was a significant factor in KKR’s surprising title win in IPL 2024. Moreover, KKR don’t have any RTM card left, meaning, they will have the same power as any other team when bidding for Iyer. But all this could be a part of a bigger strategy by KKR administration. Had they retained Iyer, it might have cost them around 16-18 crores, and KKR might sign him for less, if not for the same amount during the Mega IPL 2025 Auction.

Probability of KKR signing back Shreyas Iyer – 70-80%.

KKR’s Reasons:

  • Vacant captaincy spot
  • Former Player

2. Punjab Kings

With Shikhar Dhawan announcing retirement from all forms of the game, Punjab Kings need a player who can lead them for the next five to six seasons. Iyer is still young and is a top-quality player who can mould his game depending on the situation. PBKS could also do with a big-name player in their squad. There haven’t been many marquee Indian players in their team in the last few seasons. Shreyas Iyer fits the bill. He is someone who can take PBKS to newer heights.

Probability of PBKS signing Shreyas Iyer – 40-50%.

PBKS’ Reasons:

  • Vacant captaincy spot
  • In need of a big-name Indian player

3. Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants also have good and solid reasons to go all in for Shreyas Iyer in Mega 2025 IPL Auction. The biggest reason is the departure of KL Rahul, who in all probability, is not coming back to the franchise even with the RTM card. Shreyas Iyer is in the same mold as KL Rahul and proved last season that he has the temperament to lead the team to a title.

Probability of LSG signing Shreyas Iyer – 40-50%.

LSG’s Reasons:

  • Vacant captaincy spot
  • Perfect candidate to replace KL Rahul

Let’s take a look at Shreyas Iyer’s IPL Stats

How Sponsorships Work in Indian Sports?

“What is seen is sold” has become an old adage in this world driven by money. Big teams want to leverage the widespread appeal of teams and athletes who are at the peak of their power, like for example Virat Kohli, who is certainly the most marketable athlete in India at the moment. Neeraj Chopra is another success story that proves you don’t need to be a cricketer in India to carve out a name for yourself. If you have the talent, success will eventually chase you like a possessed spirit. Money will flow, and you will become a success story.

For Indian athletes, and this is true for most athletes around the world, a big part of their income is generated from sponsorship deals.

How Sponsorship work in Indian Sports?

Sponsorship can be categorized into many types. Teams get sponsorship in various forms from big companies, while individual athletes also earn sponsorship due to their widespread appeal. Here’s how sponsorships work in India:

  • Tournament Sponsorships: This kind of sponsorship occurs when a big company wins the right to be the title sponsor of the tournament. For example, Hero is the title sponsor of the Indian Super League, and thus the tournament is called the Hero ISL.
  • Team Sponsorships: You must have seen company names on the front of a team’s jersey. Those names of companies are the team sponsors.
  • Player Sponsorships: As the name suggests, this is when an individual athlete agrees to endorse a company for an agreed amount, like Virat Kohli doing the advertisement for MRF Tyres.

How Sponsorships Should Also Work in Indian Sports?

We have all heard tales of how Barcelona pursued Lionel Messi. There are rumors that the contract between Barcelona and Messi was signed on a napkin. From there on, Messi needn’t worry about the money. He just needed to concentrate on growing his already immense football skills. Messi was sponsored by Barcelona from an early age.

This is one of the million stories from all around the world. In almost all developed countries, if an athlete shows promise from an early age, they start getting interest from big companies such as Nike. In addition, countries such as the USA have a proper system where aspiring athletes get all sorts of backing from the government.

Young Indian athletes, on the other hand, to a great extent, have to depend on parents for financial support. With the rising cost of education, parents eventually face a stage where they have to prioritize education over sports.

For India to become a true giant in sports, there should be a system where the government, at the very least, should always support young, talented athletes.

Why Aspiring Athletes Need Sponsorship?

Athletes need caring right from their first step into the field. Their coaching starts at home with parents and the surroundings in which they are being groomed and nurtured. Inculcating right and healthy habits is the ultimate foundation parents can lay for their precious children. From the very early age, children show signs of their liking to things. Like, in Lionel Messi’s case, he was always into football. Everyone knew, even when Messi was just a little kid, that he was born to play football. This is, more often than not, the same for most kids. As they say, Coming events cast their shadows long before.

Rising cost of pursuing sports

As kids start developing and progressing in sports, the biggest hurdle is finding the money. Let’s be honest, there are no free lunches in any field. Pursuing sports and reaching a professional level requires a lot of investment. Even in India, which is a developing market and is presumed to be a nation with low costs, sports are still costly.

First, a kid should have access to basic training facilities, if not the top-notch ones, and for that to happen, they should be in at least a second-tier city. Remote villages do not even have quality coaches, let alone the facilities. With most of India’s population in the middle class, most parents do not have the luxury of affording the education, which is extremely high in India, and allowing their kids to pursue sports. That’s why sponsorships, for the special athlete, can be a game-changer for the parents and the athlete himself.

The Missing Link in Indian Sports Management: Why Teams Struggle to Scale

There is no lack of raw talent within Indian sports. Both cricket fields in small towns and football pitches in big metropolises, not to mention the wrestlers working hard in far-flung corners of villages, turn over every stone to hone their craft. However, despite India possessing a large talent pool and an unflinching dedication among athletes, many teams, academies, and leagues, especially in football and sports other than cricket, fail to scale up beyond a certain point. The primary reason is the absence of centralized management solutions, which hinders effective communication, player development, and, ultimately, growth of the sports ecosystem.

The Core Issue: Lack of Centralized Indian Sports Management System

Unlike cricket in India, which has adopted cutting-edge technology for operations and communication, sports management in other disciplines/sports largely relies on manual processes and fragmented systems. This approach often leads to inefficiencies that hamper progress, leaving aspiring athletes at the mercy of luck in finding the right opportunities within organizations. For a country aiming to become a global giant in sports, there has to be a perfect combination of synergy between athletes and organizations. Below are some key areas where the absence of centralized management creates bottlenecks.

1. Lack of Communication between teams, athletes and organizations

One of the most persistent challenges faced by teams and athletes is the inability to ensure effective communication among players, coaches, managers, and other stakeholders. Imagine a scenario where a match schedule is changed at the last minute, or a team wants to conduct trials for aspiring footballers but struggles to reach talented kids in a specific city due to a lack of organized communication. Without a centralized platform, coordinating efforts to scout talent, plan tournaments, or share critical updates becomes a chaotic task.

Another example is teams relying on group chats or word of mouth that usually don’t reach most members, leading to missed matches, confusion, or underprepared teams. This leads to confusion, missed matches, or underprepared teams. Similarly, urgent updates such as venue changes, last-minute cancellations, or training session modifications frequently fail to reach all players on time. The inability to bridge communication gaps between athletes and teams not only disrupts planning but also negatively impacts the morale of players and coaches.

2. Arbitrary decision due to Lack of Attendance and Performance Tracking

Currently, tracking player attendance and progress is a manual or informal process for most teams. Coaches often rely on memory or diary notes to monitor who is consistently attending training sessions, who is showing improvement, or which player is executing tasks as coached. This lack of proper documentation can result in unintentional biases during team selection, as decisions are based on subjective judgment rather than concrete data.

Furthermore, the absence of systematic progress tracking hinders player development. Without detailed records of performance metrics, coaches are unable to pinpoint areas where individual players need improvement. This leads to slowdown in skill development and a lack of accountability for both players and coaches.

3. Inefficient Equipment Management

Sports equipment forms the backbone of any team or academy. In India, particularly at lower-level leagues that serve as the foundation of the grassroots sports system, players are often tasked with bringing equipment to the field. In contrast, European sports systems typically assign equipment management—such as balls, bats, rackets, nets, and other essentials—to dedicated professionals.

India lacks a structured system for equipment management. Teams frequently encounter issues such as missing or damaged equipment due to the absence of inventory monitoring. In some cases, equipment remains unused simply because it has been misplaced or forgotten.

Without a proper management system, timely replacement of worn-out gear becomes challenging. This not only diminishes the quality of practice sessions but also adds unnecessary expenses to the team’s budget, as equipment is often replaced reactively rather than proactively.

4. Absence of a Central Communication Hub

In a well-functioning sports ecosystem, seamless communication should exist between players, coaches, managers, administrators, and even parents (in the case of youth academies). Unfortunately, the Indian sports system lacks a centralized platform where all stakeholders can connect, share updates, and collaborate. This lack of communication hampers team growth, athlete development, and, ultimately, revenue generation, causing teams to struggle in scaling up.

Currently, information is often shared through disparate channels such as WhatsApp groups, email threads, or physical notices. This fragmented approach leads to confusion, delays in responses, and a higher likelihood of miscommunication. A centralized hub could streamline these interactions, fostering a more cohesive and efficient environment.

5. Poor Payment Management

Managing payments is another significant challenge for sports teams and academies. Whether it’s collecting player fees, paying coaches, or handling tournament registrations, the process is often inefficient and riddled with errors. Teams in the Indian sports system frequently rely on cash payments or manual bank transfers, which are not only time-consuming but also prone to mistakes.

Additionally, many teams depend on payments from organizations, but there is no standardized or regulated payment system in place.

There have been instances reported in the media where organizations fail to pay athletes on time, leading to desperate and stressful situations for the players. Such delays and irregularities not only affect the livelihoods of athletes but also undermine their trust in the system.

Furthermore, the lack of transparency in financial transactions often results in disputes or mistrust among stakeholders. A streamlined, digital payment system could address these issues, saving time and ensuring greater accountability and transparency across the board.

The Consequences of Inefficient Management

The ripple effects of these issues are far-reaching. Teams fails to scale up and often experience:

  • Stunted Growth: Without efficient systems, teams struggle to scale their operations or participate in larger leagues and tournaments.
  • Overlooking Sports: Players and parents are likely to lose confidence in poorly managed teams, leading them to opt instead for studies.
  • Burnout for Coaches and Managers: When coaches and managers have to juggle administrative tasks on top of their primary responsibilities, it leads to frustration and mental fatigue.
  • Financial Losses: Inefficiencies in equipment management and payments lead to unnecessary expenses, draining limited resources.

The Solution: A Centralized and Modern Approach

Addressing these challenges requires a centralized, tech-enabled solution that caters to the unique needs of Indian sports teams and academies. A comprehensive platform could integrate all aspects of team management, offering features such as:

  • Real-Time Communication: A centralized app can send instant updates to players and parents, ensuring everyone stays informed about schedules, changes, or urgent announcements.
  • Attendance and Performance Tracking: Coaches can log attendance and track player progress using metrics and analytics, enabling data-driven decisions for team selection and training programs.
  • Inventory Management: Teams can maintain a digital inventory of equipment, track usage, and set alerts for timely replacements.
  • Integrated Payment System: A secure, transparent payment gateway can simplify fee collection, salary payments, and other transactions, fostering trust and efficiency.
  • Community Hub: A single platform for players, coaches, administrators, and parents to interact, share feedback, and collaborate on team activities.
Why Now Is the Time to Act

The Indian sports ecosystem is indeed at a tipping point. The introduction of professional leagues, coupled with increased participation in grassroots sports, underlines the importance of necessitated structured management systems. The single missing link that may balance the entire Indian sports system and push teams and academies to unprecedented heights might actually be the adoption of a centralized management solution.

Conclusion

There is so much talent flowing through Indian sports teams and academies. However, the archaic way of managing is unable to let that breathe. No centralized solutions mean unnecessary roadblocks at every step-from player development to financial sustainability.

10 Greatest Players of Pro Kabaddi League

Pro Kabaddi League isn’t just a league but an emotion for Kabaddi fans around the globe. 2014 was the year when Pro Kabaddi League witnessed its first season, and since then, the tournament has grown in stature with leaps and bounds. A game associated with Indian roots has made a big impact on the global stage, and PKL has to be given credit for evolving and taking the game to different corners of the world.

The growth of Pro Kabaddi has been immense ever since its inception. However, it is the players who have made this league ever-so-popular. In this post, we have compiled a list of 10 such players who have helped evolve Pro Kabaddi League since its inception. So, without any further ado, let’s dive deep into this list.

1. Pardeep Narwal (Raider)

The ‘P’ in Pro Kabaddi League is almost equivalent to Pardeep Narwal. The ‘Record Breaker’ stands atop Mount Rushmore with most raiding points in the history of the league. Pardeep made his debut in the second season of the league, i.e., in 2015, and since then he has been a regular figure and the face of Pro Kabaddi League. Pardeep is currently leading Bengaluru Bulls and we hope that he remains fit enough to play many more seasons ahead.

2. Pawan Sehrawat (Raider)

Pawan Kumar Sehrawat can be termed the new poster boy of Pro Kabaddi League. The ‘Hi-Flyer’ Pawan Kumar Sehrawat is a fan favorite. The raider has impressed one and all with his outrageous skills, and his PKL numbers are insane too. Pawan kicked off his PKL career in 2016 with the Bengaluru Bulls as a prodigy of coach Randhir Singh Sehrawat. Pawan was the architect of Bulls’ title glory in season 6 and hasn’t looked behind since. Currently, Pawan is leading the Telugu Titans and remains an integral part of Pro Kabaddi league.

3. Anup Kumar (Raider)

Anup Kumar was one of the most successful skippers of the Indian National Kabaddi Team. Many touted him as the ‘God of Kabaddi,’ the title did suit him as he won 6 gold medals for his country in International tournaments. Anup was the captain of U Mumba when they lifted the coveted PKL trophy in the second season of the league. His raiding was immensely popular among the fans, who called him the ‘King of Bonus.’ Anup made a name in PKL and was last seen in the 2023 edition as Puneri Paltan’s coach, wherein he took a young team to the finals against the eventual champions Jaipur Pink Panthers.

4. Rahul Chaudhari (Raider)

If someone talks about the best raiders of Pro Kabaddi League, one can’t miss the name of ‘Showman’ Rahul Chaudhari. The man from Uttar Pradesh was the first poster boy of Pro Kabaddi League. He made his debut for the Telugu Titans in the inaugural season and made an instant mark. Rahul was the first ever to breach the barriers of the first player to 500, 700, and 800 raid points. An immensely talented raider, however, lost his charm once his heydays were gone and went unsold in the 2024 PKL auctions. This news didn’t go well with the Showstopper as he announced his retirement from the league soon after. He last featured in the league in the 2023 edition for Jaipur Pink Panthers.

5. Maninder Singh (Raider)

‘Mighty’ Maninder Singh is another raider on this list, with more than 1000 raid points to his name in PKL. Maninder is among the most decorated raiders in the league’s history, as he stands right behind Pardeep Narwal with the most raid points. Maninder made his PKL debut in the inaugural season, i.e., in 2014 for the Jaipur Pink Panthers, but missed the next two seasons due to injury. He led Bengal Warriorz to title glory in 2019 and still plays for the same team. Maninder’s PKL numbers are insane, as he has featured in only 8 seasons and is inching closer to the 1500 raid points mark.

6. Naveen Kumar (Raider)

All the above names mentioned in the list have proved their mettle and created their legacies already. But this man, Naveen Kumar, is the best young prodigy in the league and is marching towards being among the greats of the league. Naveen Kumar is the current skipper of Dabang Delhi and has already put his hands on the coveted PKL trophy in the 2021 edition. The youngster made his PKL debut in 2018 for Dabang Delhi and has already held many records. Naveen is the fastest to breach the 1000 raid points barrier. He also holds the record for most consecutive Super 10s (28 Super 10s) in the league. Naveen Express has been prolific so far, and with age by his side, he has many miles to go.

7. Fazel Atrachali (Defender)

Being an Indian tournament, it was obvious that Pro Kabaddi League should have been dominated by Indians. However, that is not the case with Irani superstar defender Fazel Atrachali. Fazel is among the most decorated defenders in this league. He stands tall at the top of the pile, with the most tackle points for a defender in PKL history. Having made his PKL debut for U Mumba in the second season, i.e., 2015, ‘Sultan’ Fazel has represented multiple teams, including the Patna Pirates, Gujarat Giants, Puneri Paltan, and currently leading Bengal Warriorz. Take a look at his prolific PKL numbers.

Another raider who has been making all the right noise in recent times is Arjun Deshwal. The current skipper of Jaipur Pink Panthers is the second fastest to breach the 1000 raid points mark, second to Naveen Kumar. Arjun holds the tag of ‘Raiding Machine’ courtesy of his ability to raid consistently for a long time. Having kicked off his career in 2018 for UMumba, Arjun is surely a superstar in the making.

9. Manjeet Chhillar (Defender)

When you talk about defense in Pro Kabaddi League, you can not miss out on the veteran Manjeet Chhillar. He is surely among the top 10 greatest players of Pro Kabaddi League. Manjeet held the record for most tackle points in PKL history while he was active. However, after parting ways with the league shortly after winning the coveted trophy with Dabang Delhi in 2021, Chhillar’s enduring record was broken by Fazel. That being said, he remains among one of the greatest defenders of the league.

10. Deepak Niwas Hooda (All-Rounder)

Deepak Niwas Hooda is the only all-rounder in the list of 10 greatest players of Pro Kabaddi League history. Deepak Niwas Hooda had a decorated career for both India and PKL. He started his PKL journey in the inaugural season in 2014 for the Patna Pirates as a 20-year-old youngster and managed to feature for 9 seasons in a row. He was last seen playing for Jaipur Pink Panthers in 2022, but since then, he hasn’t attracted any franchises in the auctions. We hope to see him back next season, as his presence in the league will be a treat for every PKL fan.

By embracing these innovations, we pave the way for a healthier, more balanced future—one step, jump, or lift at a time.

Teams that have sorted strategy for IPL Auction with consistent retentions

The upcoming mega IPL auction promises to be an event that will be remembered for years. The last mega auction in the IPL, held in 2022, marked significant changes for many franchises. For instance, it disrupted the Mumbai Indians’ core as Hardik Pandya departed for Gujarat Titans. Mega auctions always reshape the league, leaving teams with entirely new compositions. Some squads emerge weaker, while others transform into dominant forces. One thing is certain—teams never remain the same after these auctions.

Ahead of the auction, every team has devised a plan tailored to their needs. Some teams have exercised their retention rights to the maximum, while others, to some extent, opted for a clean slate. But the question remains: what are the rules around retention, and how many players has each team retained?

Rules Around Retentions Ahead of the IPL Auction

The retention rules for the mega IPL auction are relatively straightforward. Teams can retain a maximum of five capped players (Indian or overseas) and two uncapped players from their previous roster, making a total of up to seven retained players. Additionally, teams can use Right to Match (RTM) cards to retain players during the auction. For example, if the Delhi Capitals release Rishabh Pant, they can still retain him using an RTM card.

What Are RTM Cards?

RTM cards allow teams to match the highest bid for a player they previously released, effectively retaining that player. Each team has a maximum of six total retentions—direct retentions and RTM cards combined. For instance, if a team directly retains three players, it has three RTM cards left to use during the auction. However, the BCCI has introduced a new rule for RTM cards ahead of the IPL Auction 2025. According to this rule, when a team uses an RTM card to match the highest bid, the bidder is allowed one chance to increase their bid before the player is awarded to the original team using the RTM. This new mechanism adds another layer of strategy to the auction, ensuring a competitive bidding process.

What is the cost of retaining players?

Retaining players also comes with a significant cost. Each team must disclose the bracket in which they are placing the retained players. Capped players can be retained across five retention categories, depending on the agreement between the team and the player. Here’s a breakdown of the cost of retaining players.

Retention OrderCost
1st Retention (Capped)INR 18 Crore
2nd Retention (Capped)INR 14 Crore
3rd Retention (Capped)INR 11 Crore
4th Retention (Capped)INR 18 Crore
5th Retention (Capped)INR 14 Crore
Uncapped Player RetentionINR 4 Crore

What is each team’s strategy ahead of IPL Auction?

The five-time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings, retained MS Dhoni under the uncapped player category. According to the rules, any player who has not played international cricket in the last five years qualifies as uncapped. The franchise also retained the core of their team, including Matheesha Pathirana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shivam Dube, ensuring stability and continuity.

The biggest shock from the retention announcements came from the Delhi Capitals. The franchise, for reasons unknown, chose not to retain superstar wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant. The Indian international will now enter the auction, but DC has the option to use the RTM card to re-sign him. However, this could come at a higher cost than retaining him directly. Instead, DC opted to retain Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abishek Porel.

Additionally, Royal Challengers Bangalore retained Virat Kohli for INR 21 crore, while Lucknow Super Giants chose to release their captain, KL Rahul. Similarly, KKR opted not to retain their title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer, who will now enter the auction pool.

Here, we break down each team’s strategy for the upcoming IPL auction.
