IPL 2025 Auction: How is mega auction different from mini auction

The IPL 2025 Auction will be held on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This is the second year in a row that the Indian Premier League auction is being held outside of India, following last year’s auction in Dubai. This year there’s a mega auction. Let’s break it down for you to understand what is mega auction in IPL and how it is different from mini auction.

How is mega auction different from mini auction

In the Indian Premier League, there are two types of player auctions – mega auction and mini auction.

  • Mega auctions happen every three years and are much bigger with respect to players up for grabs and teams need to fill more spots. Ahead of a mega auction, each team can only keep a few of their players. This year, the limit was up to six retentions.
  • Mini auctions are smaller with relatively fewer players going under the hammer and teams only make minor adjustments to their squad. Ahead of mini auction, most of the teams can retain most of their players.

In this year’s mega auction, high-profile names such as Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are back in the auction pool. Also, it is because of the mega auction and more players on offer that some teams can make their squad from the scratch. More player options and shuffle in rosters only add to the excitement.
